May is aptly referred to as the Month of Family in Korea. With a slew of holidays such as Children’s Day, Parents’ Day, and Teachers’ Day, it’s a time for families to gather together in celebration and sincere gestures. Imagine the streets filled with the sound of children laughing, the aroma of fresh flowers, and families gathering for joyful festivities. In Korea, May is observed as a time to honour the ties that bind families together. Get ready for an enjoyable voyage through the endearing customs of May if you’re interested in learning more about Korean culture or want to improve your language abilities!
Children’s Day (May 5th):
Children’s Day, which takes place on May 5th, is a day where kids get to be the main event and have endless fun. Families put a lot of effort into making wonderful memories, whether it’s through exciting trips to amusement parks or relaxing picnics in the park. It’s one of the most looked forward to days of the year, when kids’ eyes shine with delight as they open gifts and receive treats.
Parents’ Day (May 8th):
May 8th, the day after Children’s Day, arrives, and with it comes Parents’ Day, a day to celebrate the cornerstones of every family. This day, which initially originated as a tribute to mothers, has evolved to honour the love and sacrifices made by both parents. Families get together to show their gratitude for one another through shared meals, emotional gestures, and red or pink carnations.
Teachers’ Day (May 15th):
Not to be overlooked is Teachers’ Day, which is observed in Korea on May 15th in honour of educators. It’s a day rich with respect and history because it’s the birthdate of King Sejong, the man who invented the Korean alphabet. While carnations and presents were historically common, modern restrictions urge more simple forms of thanks, such as meaningful messages or letters. On this day, former pupils look back with nostalgia on the advice and impact of their teachers.
Aside from these widely observed holidays, May also marks Buddha’s birthday, Coming-of-Age Day, and Couples Day, adding even more cultural significance and tradition to the Month of Family. May becomes a month of introspection, gratitude, and rekindled relationships as families gather to commemorate these special occasions. So, as we bid farewell to another May, let us carry on the spirit of love, gratitude, and unity that distinguishes Korea’s Month of Family.
